On Monday, 1 July 2024, the 48th International Byron Conference of the International Association of Byron Societies will begin, under the title “Byron: The Pilgrim of Eternity.” The event is organized by the Byron Society of the Holy City of Messolonghi, under the auspices and with the support of the Ministry of Culture. The official opening ceremony will take place in the Grand Hall of the Main Building of the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens, featuring welcoming remarks and speeches by distinguished scholars and academics.
The conference will be held from 1 to 7 July 2024 in Athens and Messolonghi. It will bring together more than 100 participants and 67 speakers from 48 universities across Europe, Canada, the United States, South America, South Africa, the Middle East, and Asia. The conference will examine Byron’s life and work, as well as the enduring reception and influence of this iconic Romantic poet. In addition to the presentations, the conference will feature a variety of cultural events, such as poetry readings, concerts, and visits to museums and historic sites.
The conference is being held to mark the 200th anniversary of the death of Lord Byron, the most prominent Philhellene of all time. In fact, the 5th Earl of Lytton (a direct descendant of Lord Byron) and Robin James Byron, 13th Baron Byron, will honor the conference with their presence.
